🏒 NEW TO HOCKEY?

New to Hockey?

Welcome to CRMHA!

If your child is interested in hockey for the first time, you're in the right place.

At Campbell River Minor Hockey Association (CRMHA), we welcome players of all skill levels—from children who have never stepped on the ice to experienced players looking for competitive opportunities.

No hockey experience is required, and many of our players begin their hockey journey with little or no skating experience.

Hockey for Every Player

CRMHA offers a variety of hockey programs designed to meet the needs of players of all ages, skill levels, and interests.

🏒 Recreation Hockey

The starting point for most players.

Recreation Hockey focuses on fun, skill development, teamwork, sportsmanship, and building a lifelong love of the game.

🧡 Female Hurricanes Hockey

An all-female hockey option available for girls ages 5-18.

Players may choose Female Hockey, Co-Ed Hockey, or both through Dual Registration.

🏒 U11 Development Hockey

The first step into competitive hockey for U11 players who are seeking additional development opportunities and tournament play.

🏒 Tyee Representative Hockey

Competitive hockey opportunities for U13, U15, and U18 players looking for a higher level of competition and commitment.

🐻 North Island Bears Tier 1 Hockey

The highest level of minor hockey available on the North Island for eligible U13, U15, and U18 players.

What Age Division Is My Child In?

Players are placed into divisions based on their age as of December 31 of the current season.

Birth YearDivision
2021-2020 U7
2019-2018 U9
2017-2016 U11
2015-2014 U13
2013-2012 U15
2011-2009 U18

If you are unsure which division your player belongs in, please contact us and we will be happy to help.

Does My Child Need to Know How to Skate?

Not necessarily.

While players will enjoy hockey more if they are comfortable moving around on the ice, many children begin hockey with limited skating experience.

A good goal is for your child to be able to stand up independently and move around the ice while wearing full equipment.

If your child is brand new to hockey, don't let that stop you from registering!

What Equipment Does My Child Need?

All players require standard Hockey Canada approved equipment, including:

  • CSA-approved helmet with full face cage

  • Neck guard

  • Shoulder pads

  • Elbow pads

  • Hockey gloves

  • Hockey pants

  • Jill or athletic supporter

  • Shin guards

  • Hockey socks

  • Skates

  • Hockey stick

Need help finding equipment? Reach out to us and we'll be happy to point you in the right direction.

NHL/NHLPA First Shift Program

For children ages 6-10 who are completely new to hockey, the NHL/NHLPA First Shift Program is another excellent option.

The program includes:

  • Full Bauer hockey equipment

  • Introductory on-ice sessions

  • A welcoming environment designed specifically for beginners

Please note that players may register for either:

  • NHL/NHLPA First Shift
    OR

  • CRMHA's regular hockey program

but not both at the start of the season.

Need Financial Assistance?

Financial assistance is available through several local and national funding programs.

Programs such as KidSport, Jumpstart, Athletics for Kids, and the Hockey Canada Foundation Assist Fund may be able to help offset registration costs.
