TYEE REP PROGRAM U11-U18

Tyee Representative Hockey Program (U13-U18)

Tyee Representative Hockey Program (U13-U18)

Compete. Develop. Represent.

The Campbell River Minor Hockey Association (CRMHA) Tyee Representative Program is designed for players in U13, U15, and U18 who possess the desire, commitment, and ability to compete at a higher level of hockey.

As a Tier 2 association within BC Hockey and VIAHA, CRMHA provides players with the opportunity to compete against strong competition from across Vancouver Island while continuing to develop their skills, confidence, and understanding of the game.

Representative hockey is more competitive, time-intensive, and travel-focused than recreational hockey. It is intended for athletes who are committed to challenging themselves and reaching their full potential both on and off the ice.

While the North Island Bears provide a Tier 1 opportunity for eligible players, the Tyee Program remains the cornerstone of competitive hockey within CRMHA. Tyee teams compete at a high level within VIAHA and provide players with exceptional development opportunities while proudly representing Campbell River Minor Hockey Association.

Why Choose Tyee Hockey?

The Tyee Program provides players with opportunities to:

  • Compete against strong competition from across Vancouver Island

  • Accelerate individual skill development

  • Improve hockey IQ and tactical understanding

  • Develop leadership, teamwork, and resilience

  • Represent Campbell River with pride

  • Build lifelong friendships and lasting memories

  • Continue progressing within the CRMHA competitive hockey pathway

Our program emphasizes player development, sportsmanship, character, and a team-first culture.

Program Objectives

The goals of the CRMHA Tyee Program are to:

Foster Excellence

Encourage every player to achieve their personal best based on their ability, effort, and commitment.

Promote Enjoyment

Provide a challenging and rewarding environment where players can develop while enjoying the game.

Enable Advancement

Provide opportunities for players to pursue higher levels of hockey, including Tier 1, Junior, and other competitive pathways.

Support Development

Develop technical skills, game awareness, teamwork, leadership, and personal growth.

League Play and Tiering

CRMHA's U13, U15, and U18 Tyee teams compete within VIAHA as a Tier 2 association.

Tier designation is based on association size and regional classification and should not be viewed as a measure of team quality or competitiveness.

Teams are seeded each season to create balanced league divisions. Depending on league structure, divisions may include a mix of Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 teams.

Island League Playoffs are tier-specific, with each tier champion advancing to the BC Hockey Provincial Championships.

Financial Commitment

Representative hockey involves additional expenses beyond regular association registration fees.

Potential costs may include:

  • Representative program fees

  • Tournament entry fees

  • Travel and accommodation

  • Team apparel and CRMHA dress code requirements

  • Additional team expenses

Representative teams may conduct fundraising activities to help offset costs. All fundraising, sponsorship, and financial activities must comply with CRMHA policies and procedures.

Team budgets are approved and monitored by the CRMHA Executive, and all team staff are expected to manage finances responsibly and transparently.

Families are encouraged to carefully consider both the time and financial commitments associated with Representative hockey before entering the tryout process.

Tryouts

All players wishing to try out for a Tyee Representative team must:

  • Be registered with CRMHA

  • Be in good standing with the association

  • Register for tryouts by July 31

  • Pay the required non-refundable tryout fee at registration

Tryouts typically take place in early September.

CRMHA recognizes that tryouts can be both exciting and stressful for players and families. We encourage open communication, positive support, and respect for the process throughout evaluations.

Our coaches, managers, evaluators, and committee members dedicate countless volunteer hours to making the program possible. We ask all participants to approach the process with patience, respect, and understanding.

Please Note: Players pursuing a North Island Bears Tier 1 roster spot who wish to remain eligible for a Tyee Tier 2 roster must register and pay the applicable tryout fee for both programs.

What Coaches Look For

The selection process considers more than just skill alone. Evaluators and coaches assess:

  • Skating ability

  • Hockey sense and decision making

  • Puck skills and positional play

  • Competitiveness and work ethic

  • Coachability and attitude

  • Teamwork and sportsmanship

  • Commitment to development

The goal is to identify players who will contribute positively to the team's culture while demonstrating the skills and potential required for Representative hockey.

Evaluation Process

CRMHA is committed to a fair, transparent, and objective evaluation process.

On-Ice Skills Assessments

Players participate in standardized drills designed to assess:

  • Skating

  • Puck handling

  • Passing

  • Shooting

  • Positional play

Scrimmage Evaluations

Game situations allow evaluators to assess:

  • Hockey sense

  • Competitiveness

  • Decision-making

  • Team play

  • Positional awareness

  • Sportsmanship

Coach Input

Head coaches may provide feedback regarding leadership, work ethic, attitude, and team fit. Coach input is considered as one component of the overall evaluation process.

Neutral Evaluators

Whenever possible, independent evaluators are used to support fairness and reduce bias.

Final team selections are based on the overall evaluation results and the needs of the team.

Every player, whether placed on a Representative or Recreational team, remains an important part of the CRMHA hockey community and will continue to receive quality development opportunities.

Code of Conduct

CRMHA expects all players, coaches, team officials, and parents to demonstrate:

  • Respect for referees, opponents, and volunteers

  • Good sportsmanship on and off the ice

  • Accountability and professionalism

  • A positive, team-first attitude

These expectations apply at all CRMHA events and whenever representing the association within the broader hockey community.

More Than a Hockey Team

Tyee Hockey is built on commitment, character, community, and pride.

Many of our current coaches are former Tyee players who have returned to help develop the next generation. Their dedication helps create a culture built on respect, hard work, and excellence both on and off the ice.

Our goal is to develop not only better hockey players, but confident young people who represent Campbell River with pride, integrity, and sportsmanship.

Whether your goal is to compete at a high level, pursue future Tier 1 opportunities, or simply challenge yourself alongside dedicated teammates, the Tyee Program offers an environment where players can thrive.
